Women Overcoming Adversity: Stories That Inspire
July 14, 2026 · By Lorna Greyling
The most powerful thing a woman can do is tell the truth about where she has been — because somewhere, another woman is still in that place and needs to know she is not alone.
Over the years, I have sat across from hundreds of extraordinary women on the M-Power TV set. Women who have survived abuse, loss, illness, poverty, and betrayal — and who chose, in spite of all of it, to rise.
What strikes me every single time is how reluctant they are to call themselves brave.
The Courage We Cannot See in Ourselves
Adversity has a strange way of distorting our self-perception. When you are in the middle of a storm, survival feels like bare minimum — not heroism. But from the outside, from where I sit as an interviewer, what I witness is nothing short of extraordinary.
The woman who rebuilt her business after bankruptcy. The survivor who wrote a book so others would not feel alone. The mother who kept showing up for her children while quietly falling apart and quietly putting herself back together.
These are not small stories. These are the stories that hold the world together.
What These Women Have in Common
Across every guest, every background, every story — I have noticed a pattern:
1. They chose meaning over bitterness. Not immediately. Not easily. But eventually.
2. They found their community. Not one person who understood, but a handful.
3. They used their story. They did not bury it. They offered it.
Your Story Is Someone Else's Survival Guide
Whatever you have walked through — it is not wasted. The chapter you wish had never been written may be the very chapter that gives another woman the courage to turn the page in her own story.
Tell it. Share it. Offer it.
That is what makes adversity into legacy.
